Counting Down the Days…(to post baby bump fashion!)

I actually had a completely different post in mind for today, but frankly, at 35 weeks, I’m feeling fat and bloated and not quite like myself. So, to remind me that there is a light at the end of the tunnel and to give myself a quick pick-me-up, I decided to concentrate on fashion. Particularly, fashion I would like to have after this baby bump has become le petite bebe!

Now, I know the first few postpartum weeks, if not months, may find me living in pajama yoga pants and oversized sweaters, but I continue to hold onto this crazy idea that one day, I will be that stylish momma prancing about in my nude pumps, skinny jeans, leopard scarves, and pops o’ color…

Ok, I’m not SO unrealistic to think that I will ever look like this…Miranda Kerr

…but a girl needs something to aspire to, yes?

So as I am counting down the weeks until I am holding sweet baby in my arms, I am also counting down the weeks until I can properly fit into chic and simple styles like this:

Simple and classic. Love the hat!

Or this:

This…

stripes + boyfriend jeans + heels

And definitely this!

Other than the impossible aspiration of looking anything like super model Miranda Kerr, one momma that I do aspire to is Casey Leigh of The Weigands. Holy crap that woman is hot! Her fashion style is classic with a rocker chic/bohemian vibe – I love getting glimpses of her life and style (and mad photography skilz!) via Instagram. And her children…oh my gosh. Simply gorgeous. Yep. I officially have a girl crush.

That bag, by the way, is on my wish list (or better yet, this one!). My birthday just happens to be next weekend so….(ehem, Mr. C…)

Tell me, woman to woman, did you fall back into postpartum fashion fairly quickly or do you still find yourself struggling just to shower?! (Meaning: do I need a realistic slap in the face?!)

Incorporating the Modern…A Wishful Room Update.

There’s something about colder, crisper weather that makes me want to redecorate my entire house. Add to that my nesting instinct and it’s a recipe for trouble!

Of course, with a baby on the way, my decorating budget has dramatically decreased. And I’m pretty certain once my little one is in my arms I won’t give a second thought to what my house looks like for at least the first month, but in the meantime, a girl can dream, right?

Yep. There’s baby stuff around the house now!

When I moved into this home 2 years ago, I had a bit of an infatuation with Pottery Barn. Who doesn’t? But since then, my style has morphed a bit and I would love to incorporate a few modern touches. My new infatuation? Black and white!

However, I wasn’t sure how to incorporate this new infatuation with my much more rustic décor without spending an arm and a leg…until I realized that the answer was right under my feet!

Living Room & Hallway_edited-1

Since my floors are a lovely, distressed black and white, I figured that I could easily (and cheaply!) tie this into the décor with a few fun throw pillows and blankets without things looking too hodge podge. So I turned to Etsy and Zara Home for some inspiration…

Let me explain…the throw blanket and pillow with yellow detail you see directly above would go on the armchair and incorporate the few pops of yellow that I already have around the room. And the remaining pillows would get arranged on the couch and would incorporate the teal-ish blue on the entertainment unit and game table/bistro chair.

I would also love to find or create a large piece of canvas art next to my fiddle leaf fig, and print out some fun artwork to replace in the two frames hung above the bench.

And voila! With very little effort I would have a completely new, modern vintage (“modage”) look. Now to replace the couch…

What do you think? Love it or hate it? Do you think the black & white clashes too much with the rug?

What’s On My Registry…

With just a little over two months to go and a baby shower coming up next weekend (woo hoo!) I wanted to share with you a few things from my registry.

Now, if you’re expecting and anything like me, you were – or are – absolutely clueless as to where to start. I actually began creating my registry at about month 3, researching some of the big ticket, gender-neutral items. And of course, in perfect Kristen fashion, I began stressing. I finally calmed down once I discovered the gender of my little bean (around week 22) and realized Aha!This should actually be a FUN process, not a stressful one! So, keeping my registry private, I then went a little crazy and began adding whatever struck my fancy.

Like these guys from the Animal Prints Shop. How can I possibly resist baby animal prints for the nursery?!

Over the last month, I finally began weeding through the crazy and finalizing the registry to go public prior to the shower. And believe me, it is hard to weed through the millions of baby products out there because, well, it’s baby stuff – it’s all pretty darn cute! It’s easy to get lost in the cuteness of it all and fall into the opinions of everyone else. But what kept me sane was the thought that the registry was for me, not for everyone else. It was – is – a way for me to stay organized and keep track of what I think is best for my baby, my lifestyle, and my home.

So without further ado, here are a few of my favorite things from my registry:

gDiapers.

In my attempt to go a bit more organic/natural with baby products, I’ve been contemplating cloth diapers but figured that it would be way too messy and time-consuming to keep up with the laundering and sterilization of it all. And then I came across these beauties! gDiapers give you the best of both worlds: a reusable diaper cover made of 92% cotton, 8% spandex with a snap-in pouch of breathable nylon, and disposable, biodegradable inserts that are composed of cellulose rayon, fluffed wood pulp, and super absorber (all chlorine free, latex free, perfume free, and dye free). They come in sizes from newborn to large and a variety of colors and patterns. The bottom line is – they are safe, environmentally friendly, and most importantly, pretty darn cute!

Boppy Bare Naked Pillow with Pillow Protector and Organic Slipcover

Again, this is my attempt to go organic. You don’t have to go with an organic slipcover and there are many other options available. However, this is a time where I have taken the opinions and advice of others into account – Boppy pillows are supposedly an essential! These suckers not only provide the perfect ergonomic support when feeding, but they also transition into props for tummy time, play time, and learning to sit up. Meaning it is money well spent!

Bestever Lamb Plush Play Mat Set

Ok, this is neither organic nor essential but it’s super cute and I couldn’t help myself. And it looks insanely comfortable! Sometimes, you just gotta give in to the crazy, ok?!

Britax B-Agile & B-Safe Travel System

I did A LOT of research on strollers and read WAY too many reviews, but this is the stroller that I determined best fit our needs. Is it perfect? No. I’ve come to the conclusion that there really isn’t one perfect stroller out there! I would love for it to have more urban wheels and for the car seat attachment to be a bit smaller and lighter, but after testing it out at Buy Buy Baby and comparing it to others, it does seem to ride exceptionally smooth, folds and compacts easily (with the push of a button), and has multiple adjustments to keep baby comfortable. And per the reviews, it’s extremely durable and should last for years to come!

Bundleme Hat, Mittens & Booties – JJ Cole Collections

Again, just because it’s so darn cute! And with an end of October due date and Winter on its way, I think it is pretty essential…

For all you mommas out there, what are some of your favorite, can’t-do-without products? Do you have any must-have advice for us mommas-to-be?

TAKE ME TO BLACKBERRY FARM…

Why hello my friends and welcome back to the daily grind! I hope everyone had an exceptional weekend – I know I did. As mentioned, my parents came into town for the weekend and it couldn’t have turned out any better. The weather was fabulous, the food was filling, the beer was flowing, and the football was, well…..a bit torturous, actually – UVA  lost. But if that’s the worst of my weekend, I’ll take it!

After my parents left on Sunday afternoon, I dragged out the leisurely weekend for as long as possible with a pile of magazines that I insisted on browsing through before removing my butt from the couch. And it paid off. During this said browsing session, I came across the In the Vernacular article via Architectural Digest, and was immediately reminded of my dream to go to Blackberry Farm….

blackberry12

Needless to say, much daydreaming commenced!

In the Vernacular describes the newly built home of second-generation Blackberry Farmers, Sam Beall and his wife Mary Celeste. The home, designed by Spitzmiller & Norris and decorated by Suzanne Kasler, sits on scenic rise over looking the meadows of the 4,200 acre Blackberry Farm and, simply said, it is stunning…

The house was built using as many local artisans and materials as possible – an excellent example of this is the interior trim and paneling, built out of the hardwood felled to accommodate the property, as well as the fieldstone used for the chimneys, fireplaces, and the central bay’s façade, which were harvested from the property.

I love the traditional twist on a country classic and while the home décor is a bit more tailored than my own design taste, I can’t deny its exquisiteness! It is a modern take of southern hospitality at its best! And a lovely addition to Blackberry Farm. Oh, how I dream….

GO KRISTEN, IT’S YOUR BIRTHDAY….

So I woke up bright and early this morning (ok, 7:30 is early for me…), plopped myself in front of my laptop with my ritual cup o’ joe, and lo and behold, there was Google morphed into a birthday cake. And then it dawned on me, today is my birthday!

After 30 years of fabulous and often and sometimes over-the-top birthday parties, I’m finally settling into my ripe old age of 31. And guess what folks? There’s no birthday party this year. There’s no it’s-all-about-me day. There’s no I-can-do-whatever-I-want day. Nope. Today is just another day, and I’m feeling good about it.

In fact, I’ll actually be headed down to Norfolk this afternoon to celebrate someone else – my cousin is getting married! So while it won’t be about me – it’ll still be a heck of a good time with friends and family. Tonight is the rehearsal dinner, and I’m quite certain many margaritas will be had by all.

But while we (or at least ME) are on the subject of my birthday, let me share with you my just because Wish List…

Have a great weekend everyone – I know I will!
